Last year, Peter Kilanowski, a member of the Boy Scouts of America, conceived of and undertook a project to renovate the local monument to Revolutionary War hero General Tadeusz Kosciuszko on State Route 257. With a letter of support from the Polish-American Club, he obtained approval from the Boy Scouts, contacted the families upon whose properties the monument rests for permission, and obtained the proper permits from the Ohio District of Transportation (ODOT) for his project. The Polish-American Club donated items (a flag and a book), as did other members and businesses of the community. The monument was rededicated on Sunday, August 13th 2006 with members of Peter's Boy Scout Troop, his family and friends, representatives of the Polish National Alliance (who funded the original commemorative plaque), many members and officers of the Polish-American Club, and the property owners in attendance. Peter did an admirable job summing up Gen. Kosciuszko's contributions to the American Revolution as head Engineer of the Continental Army including his designing the defenses of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. With great pride in our shared heritage, the Polish national flag was raised on the new flagpole. For his hard work, Peter was awarded the well-deserved Eagle Badge by the Boy Scouts of America. The Polish-American Club thanks Peter for his honor, dedication, and commitment to the preservation of the Polish-American history of Central Ohio.
